Demystifying Mystery Boxes

Demystifying Mystery Boxes

In the NFT space, mystery boxes are quite a common practice. A mystery box is a box that holds a unique item that the buyer doesn't know before they purchase it. People who buy mystery boxes online do that without knowing what it has till they open it.

Though the term is becoming popular in the NFT realm, it has been around since e-commerce. Common traditional examples are the Amazon mystery box and the eBay mystery box. Different NFT projects are now realizing mystery boxes with NFTs of varying rarity scales. The buyer does not know what it will contain when buying a mystery box online. Sometimes, they may end up with a very rare NFT that ranks highly in rarity tools.

At the moment, there are a myriad of NFT mystery box series in existence. But, unfortunately, once an item is purchased, the user can't ask for a refund when they open it, not minding if they liked it or not. Some NFT mystery box projects offer artworks from a famous artist or a rare NFT from an NFT project. However, it has gone past artworks, as some provide in-game items in their mystery boxes, raising the chances that the NFT they access are valuable and rare and letting them flip the NFTs for a lot more.

Sometimes, blockchain gaming platforms may add avatars, skins, lands, space ships, weapons, and other collectibles in their mystery boxes.

Though the mystery box could open one up to opportunities to own rare NFTs, it could also go wrong. Those that end up with the more common Non Fungible Tokens may watch as the value of their tokens falls, while those that have rarer NFTs may flip them for money. So while participating in a mystery box online event, it may go either way.
