Vitalik Buterin Proposes 4 Designs to Decrease Ethereum Max Block Size

In one of the initial proposals, Vitalik Buterin, alongside Ethereum Foundation researcher Toni Wahrstätter, suggested increasing the calldata cost from 16 to 42 gas

This adjustment would result in reducing the maximum block size from 1.78 megabytes to 0.68 megabytes.

The second design involves increasing the cost of call data while simultaneously decreasing other opcode costs.

The third solution proposes to cap call data per block, as outlined in EIP-4488. However, this approach could potentially disincentivize the use of call data for data availability and impact applications heavily dependent on it.

The final idea is to offer an "EVM loyalty bonus" to compensate calldata-heavy applications.
