Key Insights

  • ' JamboPhone has now entered the crypto phone market at $99, targeting emerging markets with limited Web3 access.
  • Aptos' JamboPhone boasts impressive specs like Android 13 and pre-installed Aptos apps like Petra Wallet.
  • The crypto phone niche is heating up with competition from established manufacturers like Solana, HTC Exodus and Finney
  • The JamboPhone and Saga/Chapter 2's differences could complement each other rather than compete, and bring in new Web3 users.

The Solana Saga phones are no longer alone in the market.

From mid-2023 until the time of writing, crypto phones have hit the market, and are becoming more popular by the day.

The newest addition to this fray is called the "JamboPhone", from Aptos.

Much like Solana's Saga and Chapter 2, the JamboPhone came out of a collaboration between the Aptos Foundation and an African tech startup called Jambo.

Like most other crypto phones on the market, the JamboPhone aims to connect users to the  Aptos ecosystem and could power the next crypto phone craze.

The JamboPhone Introduced

The JamboPhone's specs are impressive.

It features an Android 13 operating system with a 6.5" IPS LCD. Moreso, it is priced much lower than the Solana Saga, at around $99, and is already available in over 40 countries, mainly in emerging markets.

The JamboPhone introduced

According to the Jambo startup, aside from being a crypto phone, the JamboPhone is "the best gaming smartphone in its class," because it supports "high-quality graphics" and smooth gameplay.

JamboPhone, being a crypto phone, also comes pre-installed with Aptos-compatible applications like the Aptos-specific digital wallet, called Petra.

Using the Jambo phone, users can also access other applications like social media, e-commerce, and gaming platforms

The Crypto Phone Explosion

As we mentioned earlier, the crypto-phone space is turning out to be the next big niche in crypto.

The JamboPhone already has competition from not just Solana, but other companies that have either launched or are planning to launch similar crypto phones like the well-known Saga/Chapter 2 phones from Solana.

Chapter 2 has already become a massive success in the US, and even reached the 100k preorder milestone in less than 30 days.

This is a testament to investor interest in the Solana phone, considering how the previous phone (Saga) took more than a year to sell 20,000 phones.

We have other crypto phones like the $699 HTC Exodus, as well as Finney, a crypto smartphone developed by the Swiss-Israeli Sirin Labs.

Overall, unlike the other phones on the market, the JamboPhone capitalizes on being more affordable and more widely available, especially in developing regions like Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.

However, it also has the disadvantage of being less distinctive and less advanced, as it resembles a generic smartphone with similar hardware and software.

JamboPhone Versus Solana's Chapter 2

The Jambophone and Solana's Saga are both new and exciting projects in the crypto phone space, but their approaches differ significantly.

For example, as we mentioned before, the Jambophone targets users in developing regions, who have limited to Web3.

The Solana Saga/Chapter 2, however, targets users all over the world, whether with access to Web3 or not.

Moreover, while the Jambophone is priced at $99 and might be more affordable to buyers in the target regions, the Solana's Saga is priced at around $499, making it more expensive for users in developed regions.

We also have other technical details like the JamboPhone's Android 13, and the Saga's Android 14.

Overall, Whether Jambophone and Solana's mobile phone will succeed or not remains to be seen.

However, both of these products are set to complement one another in the emerging crypto phone niche, rather than enter a competition as more users get onboarded into web3.
